Well, I kind of dropped the ball on this project. Some three years ago, I challenged myself to watch all 100 of the films on Sight & Sound magazine’s decennial “best movies” critic poll, and to write a personal blog post about each one. I got off to a good start, I think, but then, as with so many New Years resolutions, I bailed on it.
The last entry I see on my blog is from April 2023, about Billy Wilder’s excellent “Sunset Boulevard.” It’s not much of a blog post, although I remember having some heady thoughts about the movie and its view of Hollywood celebrity culture in light of the social media era, when celebrity is more accessible (and more toxic) than ever.
Moreover, looking at the full list of movies, I know I’ve seen a lot more of them since 2023 without writing even a word about them here. I may have logged a few on my Letterboxd, but that scarcely counts as “writing.”
So, here, I proclaim my intent to complete my challenge, albeit three years later than intended. Good luck to me.
